This study concluded that "rheumatologists play an important role in the identification of celiac disease" among children with celiac disease seen in pediatric rheumatology clinic for joint complaints.
Reviewing viruses and celiac disease: what do we know?, researchers concluded, "Viruses are probably an important factor in the onset of CD, but certainly not the only one.... There are probably several viruses that can lead to CD, and maybe several activation pathways leading to a loss of dietary tolerance...." and "...it seems that in humans, viruses alone do not lead to CD."

This review of COVID-19 and celiac disease states, "individuals with celiac disease do not appear to be at an increased risk of contracting COVID-19 or having a more severe disease course." It also looked at access to gluten-free food during the pandemic, finding that the "pandemic highlighted two important ways that environmental circumstances can affect the gluten-free diet. Given the lack of access to dining during strict lockdown, some individuals reported greater adherence to a gluten-free diet. Conversely, other individuals with celiac disease reported greater difficulty in affording gluten-free food and reported greater barriers to adhering to a gluten-free diet."

This study found that celiac disease is a risk factor for Mature T and NK cell lymphoma.
