Welcome to 2017! Goodness, 2016 was a busy year for NCA! Did you watch our 2016 highlights video?
We conducted a college survey and released a Survival Guide for GF college students, welcomed the Gluten-Free Food Bank to our family and sponsored a summer intern at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. We hosted 10-12 meetings every month, had the Brains, Bellies and Celiac event in October and are now working hard planning the next symposium in conjunction with the Celiac Center at Harvard Medical School.
The Symposium, Medical Myths and Milestones, will take place on Saturday April 1st from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration for Medical Myths and Milestones will open soon so watch our homepage for more details! Hope to see you there!

This full day event will be held on April 1st at Four Points by Sheraton in Norwood, MA. It will include gluten-free breakfast and lunch. Vendors will be present.

Group meetings provide the opportunity to talk about managing celiac disease and living gluten-free. There are no set agendas, pre-registration is not required and there is no charge to attend. Just drop in!

Chef Shilpi, of EZ Compliments, is running many gluten-free Indian cooking classes in January and February. Mention that you are a NCA member to get a $10 discount on registration.
Register through Newton Community Ed for Soup’s On, a gluten-free cooking class taught by Sharon Wanunu. Soup’s On will take place on Wednesday January 18 from 10 am to 1 pm.
Sur La Table is putting on a cooking class, Deliciously Gluten-Free. Sessions will be held in Canton, CT, Boston, MA and Natick, MA as well as other locations across the country on January 11 and January 22nd. Click here for more information and to register.

Research Study Participants Sought
Dr. Ciaran Kelly, MD, at BIDMC Celiac Center is looking for biopsy-proven celiac patients (18-80 years old) who have been following a gluten-free diet but still have symptoms to participate in a research study.
This clinical research study is designed to evaluate whether taking digestive enzyme supplements can help reduce persistent symptoms in patients with celiac disease who are following a gluten-free diet.
What will happen:
– Up to 40 days participation from first study visit to last study visit
– Blood work and visits with our doctors & dietician
– 3 visits at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston
– 34 days of study medication
– Weekly surveys
– Daily stool log
– Phone calls once every 2-4 days
– Parking in the BIDMC garage is covered

Research Donation Opportunity
Alessio Fasano, MD, and his team at the Center for Celiac Research at MassGeneral Hospital for Children are studying how undiagnosed celiac disease during pregnancy impacts a family for generations. Fasano is collaborating with the Child Health and Development Studies, a 50-year study based in the San Francisco Bay area that is sharing its study population of 15,000 families for this celiac research.
Donations are tax-deductible and 100% of the funds will go to the Child Health and Development Studies for the purpose of this collaboration with Dr. Fasano.

Dining Out Notes
A member recently went to Precinct Kitchen (in the Loews Hotel, corner of Stuart and Berkeley Streets in Boston) and gave it rave reviews. When she told them she has to eat gluten-free, the manager said they were very conscious of that and in fact, the only flour they used in the kitchen was GF. The food was delicious and all the wait staff were friendly and helpful. Because it is in a hotel, Precinct is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
A member visited the White Mountain Hotel in North Conway, NH and found that most of their menu is głuten free and the staff is well-informed. She felt like she was being treated royally there.
A member stated that Shake Shack is now offering gluten-free buns. Remember that the fries at Shake Shack are cooked with breaded items so are not considered gluten-free.
A member shared that Starbucks is planning to offer a certified GF breakfast sandwich with smoked Canadian bacon and egg with reduced-fat cheddar cheese on roll (see image above). Click here to read about it.

Product Finds & Notes
Cinnamon Pebbles joins the Post cereal line-up of GF offerings.
A member noticed that Yoplait yogurt no longer states that it is gluten-free on the packaging. We inquired about this and were told that the yogurt is still gluten-free and the GF statement will return to the packaging on the next production run.
