What to say on a date

I was just diagnosed and it's really hard to know what to do or say when I go out on dates, especially for the first time! Help!!

It is hard enough to find someone you want to go on a date with and unfortunately, food is often involved. There are a few things you can try but remember, at some point you will have to explain your dietary restrictions. For a first date it is often recommended to suggest a non-food related activity, such as a museum, zoo, or walk in the park. Going out for tea or coffee may be a bit easier than a full meal.

If you do want to go for a meal, ask if you can pick the restaurant or make a couple suggestions to choose from that you know have safe options for you. Telling the person sooner than later will be important. Some people will be more open and understanding while others will have no idea what celiac disease is or how it affects people. Be ready to give a brief explanation to help them understand. In the long term, you will need someone who is willing to work with you to ensure you eat safely.
